U.S. Marine Maj. Matthew Holfinger, an infantry office with 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, III Marine Expeditionary Force, passes a promotion warrant to Cpl. Edgar Enriquez-Barrois, an infantry rifle Marine, during a promotion ceremony aboard Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 1, 2023. Corporal is the first rank within the noncommissioned officer (NCO) ranks. With this promotion comes greater responsibilities and expectations as NCOs serve as the backbone of the Marine Corps and as a vital link between officers and enlisted Marines.
