EODESU-1 Assists USS Portland in NASA Orion Recovery

221211-N-NM271-4173 PACIFIC OCEAN (Dec. 11, 2022) Navy Divers assigned to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit One (EODESU-1) connect the NASA line load attenuating mechanism assembly to the NASA Artemis I Orion spacecraft to pull it into the amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD 27) well deck, Dec. 11, 2022. These divers are highly trained and proficient in open water and small boat procedures, adaptable to changing situations, excel at on-the-spot problem solving, experts at salvage and towing operations, and are chosen for their expertise as being a salvage unit and mobile divers. Portland, along with Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Montgomery (LCS 8), is underway in U.S. 3rd Fleet in support of the recovery. The retrieval operation is part of a Department of Defense effort that integrates combatant command service capabilities to determine best practices for safely retrieving spacecraft capable of carrying humans into space.
