U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Thomas Durate, an Orange, California, native and mortarman with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, poses for a photo during Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluation on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 14, 2022.

“I joined the Marine Corps to become an infantryman but when I found out about mortarmen, it’s like something just clicked,” said Durate. “ There are so many moving parts and more to being a mortarman than what people realize. The thing that keeps me going is the boys in my platoon. You may not always have good days but they’re right by your side through it all.” The purpose of a MCCRE is to formally evaluate the unit’s combat readiness in preparation for deployment.
