Maj. Gen. John Allen, Air Force Civil Engineer Center commander, and other leaders looks on as AFCEC Engineer Reza Salavani describes the Solar Carport during a visit to the 9700 Area at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, on April 20, 2022. Constructed in 2010, the carport was funded by the Air Force Research Lab-Advanced Power Technology Office. The steel structure proved its strength in 2018 when, following a direct hit by the Category 5 storm Hurricane Michael,133 of its 140 panels remained intact. The system currently provides power for a variety of things including tools, test equipment and battery-charging. It also provides power to new pumps at the 9700 Area fuel depot.
