220401-N-XN177-1104 PACIFIC OCEAN (April 1, 2022) – Maj. Gen. Bradford Gering, commanding general of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing center, disembarks an MV-22 Osprey aircraft attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 362 aboard amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7), April 1. VMM-362 brought Gering to the ship for a tour of the ship and to observe the U.S. Marine Corps’ Lightning carrier concept demonstration. The Lightning carrier concept demonstration shows Tripoli and other amphibious assault ships are capable of operating as dedicated fixed-wing carrier platforms, capable of bringing fifth generation Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing aircraft wherever they are required.
