U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Max J. Noel, a videographer with Communication Strategy and Operations, Headquarters Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, stands at attention with Lance Cpl. Manny, the mascot of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, during the Kilo Company graduation aboard MCRDSD, Jan. 28, 2022. Manny is named in honor of Sgt. Johnny R. Manuelito Sr., one of the ‘original 29’ Navajo Code Talkers who trained in the first all-Navajo platoon on the depot in 1942. Manuelito helped create the code that the Navajos developed at Camp Elliot, now, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. He became an instructor, teaching other Navajo Marines the code.
