The Polar Plunge, as known in the US, is actually associated with the Ukrainian observance of Epiphany every January 19th. Eastern Christian traditions commemorate the baptism of Jesus at Epiphany. It reflects both cultural and religious values which celebrate rebirth and new life. The first soldiers with JMTG-U to experience this tradition were from the Tennessee National Guard’s 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in early 2019. Last week, Soldiers from Task Force Gator were able to continue participation in the event, plunging into a frozen lake following the blessing of the water by a local priest. Task Force Gator is incredibly grateful to the local community for welcoming us and allowing us to celebrate alongside them!
