GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— U.S. Army 1st Lt. Karl Berkemeier, an emergency room nurse assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, dons a face shield before entering a COVID positive patient’s room at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dec. 13, 2021. Applying personal protective equipment before seeing patients helps stop the spread of the disease and keeps Soldiers mission ready. Berkemeier is part of a medical response team that is deployed in support of the continued Department of Defense COVID response operations to help communities in need. U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing flexible Department of Defense support to the whole-of-government COVID response. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Ty Baggerly)
