Spc. Jahadul Alam, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter repairer with 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas, helps a young Afghan evacuee write words in English during the language and education class at Fort Bliss’ Doña Ana Complex in New Mexico, Sept. 24, 2021. Alam serves as a translator in support of Operation Allies Welcome and helps teach classes on the alphabet, numbers, and basic manners to Afghan children in order to prepare them for the American education system. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
