Thomas (right), assistant operations officer, Combat Logistics Battalion 13, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and native of Encinitas, Calif., learns from Pat Gardner, state fire marshal instructor of rescue systems and retired San Francisco Fire Department chief, how to use a diamond tipped power saw on reinforced concrete during urban search and rescue training at the SFFD Treasure Island Training Facility, Oct. 5, 2012. Marines and Sailors with CLB-13, spent the morning learning how to clear obstacles and reach survivors of collapsed buildings as part the 2012 San Francisco Fleet Week. From Oct. 3-8, Marines and Sailors of the 13th MEU, I Marine Expeditionary Brigade, will participate in numerous community outreach events including the Italian Heritage Day parade, urban search and rescue demonstration, park restoration projects and hospital visits.
