Staff Sgt. Ken Porras, course instructor and native of North Bergen, N.J., oversees a canine team as they make their way through a training scenario. Porras is one of the instructors responsible for preparing the teams in the course for the rigors of combat deployments, a responsibility he and his other instructors take very seriously. "We train for combat," he said. "There is no sugar coating, whip cream or cherries on top. It's straight up survival."
