U.S. Army Spc. Keonte Anthony, a Gary, Indiana native and truck driver assigned to the 1438th Transportation Company stationed in Elkhart, Indiana, poses during a break while working at the state-led, federally-supported Community Vaccination Center (CVC) at the former Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana, May 8, 2021. Anthony is part of a group of U.S. Army National Guard personnel from around the state of Indiana that are supporting the vaccination efforts. His main responsibility is running the walk-in observation area, along with local emergency services, to watch over community members for their 15-to-30-minute waiting period after receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. Anthony grew up across the street from Roosevelt High School, which is now where the CVC has set up and where he is working to benefit the community. “Being here makes me feel like I’m back home and trying to do something for a community that I know needs more help to thrive,” Anthony said. “I guess you can say this is basically me giving back to the community that raised me.” U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
