U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. (Ret.) Fred Mitchell receives the Congressional Gold Medal at his home in Jacksonville, N.C., Aug. 29, 2012. The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to Mitchell by the President of the United States of America in recognition for his military service as a Montford Point Marine and utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contribution during his service.
