Scott Winkler, a U.S. Paralympian, lifts weights in the fitness center at RAF Lakenheath, England, Aug. 20, 2012. Winkler was competing in shot put, in which he ranked third in the world and was the American record holder. More than 50 U.S. Paralympians and hopefuls were honing their skills and making final preparations for competition in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. The Paralympics is a major international sporting event in which thousands of athletes, including wounded and injured U.S. Service members, participate in a variety of sporting events.
