Lantern Slide 4: Jefferson Pier or Stone; erected in 1792 at the precise center of the 10-mile square. A portion of the stone was accidentally removed and the remaining portion hidden by roadwork in 1872, mostly by the filling in of the Washington Canal. The stone was recovered and re-erected December 2, 1889 and subsequently lost again. Its location was approximately 150 yards from the Washington Monument. The Capitol Stone, another historical marker, was at one time several yards south west of the Washington Monument. The difference between it and the Jefferson Stone represented half the length of the old part of the Capitol Building.
