Maj. Gen. David C. Hill tours the Cold Region Research and Development Center's Frost Effects Research Facility

Maj. Gen. David C. Hill, deputy chief of engineers and deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), toured the Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, New Hampshire, Feb. 27-28, 2021. CRREL Research Mechanical Engineer Terry Melendy gives Hill a tour of CRREL’s Frost Effects Research Facility, a temperature-controlled warehouse with multiple functions, which include the ability to build short sections of roads, as well as freeze and thaw to recreate the effects of ten years of harsh winter effects on concrete or other road building materials in a substantially shorter amount of time.

The purpose of Hill’s visit was to gain a better understanding of CRREL’s function and capacity to support the USACE mission of delivering vital public and military engineering services, partnering in peace and war to strengthen our nation’s security, energizing the economy and reducing risks from disasters.
