U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Wesley Smith, a machine gunner with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment (2/8), 2d Marine Division, received a Navy Commendation Medal on Dec. 18, 2020, for performing lifesaving actions on a fellow Marine at Camp Lejeune.
“Once I realized something was wrong, my adrenaline began to rush. It was easy to rely on my Marine Corps training to assist a fellow Marine in trouble,” said Cpl. Smith. He continued, “It took a little while to set in. I didn’t realize the impact that I had on him and his family until days later. I’m glad I was there to keep this family whole.”
Cpl. Smith displayed a calm and confident demeanor as he provided first-aid, video-called his battalion’s medical officer for over-the-phone advice, and coordinated EMS arrival after finding a Marine unresponsive in early November. Cpl. Smith’s intervention consisted of providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which improved the condition of the unresponsive Marine. Upon EMS arrival, Cpl. Smith helped EMS personnel transport the patient to the ambulance. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Stormy Mendez)
