Oregon Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Randy Bowman, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 82nd Cavalry Regiment, speaks with a local resident entering his neighborhood where Bowman mans a traffic control point (TCP) to help keep the neighborhood and community safe, Warm Springs, Ore., Sept. 17, 2020. The Lionshead Fire, located 14-miles west of Warm Springs could potentially lead to an evacuation, leaving homes vulnerable. Bowman, stationed at one of four TCPs along U.S. Highway 26, helps reassure local citizens and monitors anyone who enters and exits the neighborhoods, building strong, positive relationships with the residents he sees day in and day out. The partnership between the Warm Springs Police Department and the Oregon National Guard was vital in freeing up officers to perform more critical law enforcement duties in the area. Approximately 1000 Oregon Guard Citizen-Soldiers and Citizen-Airmen are supporting overall firefighting efforts with both aviation and ground crews, in addition to supporting county liaison teams and Oregon State Police with both TCPs and fatality search and rescue operations.
