This is a colonial-era religious painting, likely from Latin America (Cuzco School or similar tradition), depicting the Virgin Mary crowned and holding the Christ Child, both wearing crowns. The Virgin is dressed in an elaborate blue and gold brocade mantle and holds a lit candle or scepter, flanked by cherubs and red drapery. The painting is housed in an ornate gilded frame and bears a U.S. Department of Homeland Security ICE watermark, suggesting it is documented as part of a cultural property or art recovery case.

A repatriation ceremony marking the return of a collection of cultural property, art and antiquities looted from Peru to their rightful owners – the people of Peru, was held July 12. The objects were seized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in New York, Delaware, Texas, and West Virginia. The reclaimed objects include nine colonial paintings, a monstrance, and four pre-Columbian objects. Pictured here is a painting of the Virgin of the Candlestick.
