PACIFIC OCEAN (February 2020) The Honorable Robert F. Behler, Director, Operational Test and Evaluation, Office of the Secretary of Defense, speaks to Sailors and distinguished visitors aboard the Ohio-class, ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 30. Demonstration and Shakedown Operations give the U.S. Navy an opportunity to conduct scheduled missile test flights of unarmed, life-extended Trident II (D5LE) missiles to evaluate and demonstrate the readiness of an SSBN's strategic weapon system and crew before operational deployment, following a submarine's engineered refueling overhaul.
