Del Toro, who was a joint terminal attack controller in Afghanistan in 2005 when his Humvee was struck by an improvised explosive device, suffered burns over most of his body and lungs. He was allowed to remain in the Air Force despite a 100 percent disability rating and competed in four events in the 2012 Warrior Games.
