Vice Admiral DeWolfe Miller (center), Commander, Naval Air Forces, Rear Admiral Mark Leavitt (right), Commander, Naval Safety Center, and Rear Admiral Fredrick Luchtman (left), Physiological Episodes Action Team Lead, discuss Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) for Physiological Episodes (PHYSEP) during a briefing in Norfolk, VA, on February 20th, 2020. Key stakeholders from the Naval Aviation Enterprise, U.S. Air Force Training and Readiness, the Navy medical community, the Royal Australian Air Force and key industry partners met to collaborate on efforts to mitigate PHYSEPs and Physiological Events (PEs). A PHYSEP occurs when any of the following conditions exist: Decompression Illness, Hyperventilation, Spatial Disorientation, Loss of Consciousness, Unintentional Rapid Decompression or other physiological, pathological or physical problems that manifest during or after actual flight. A PE differs from, and is a subset of, a standard PHYSEP in that PEs are directly attributed to both a known or suspected aircraft or aircrew systems malfunction AND physiological symptoms experienced by one or more aircrew or maintainers. Two conditions are required to signal a reportable PE. PEs can occur in-flight, on deck or manifest post-flight with the delayed-onset of aircrew symptoms.
