A boat crew is lowered Jan. 22, 2020, from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB-10) near McMurdo Station, Antarctica, in order to ferry passengers from the cargo ship Ocean Giant to McMurdo Station. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star created a channel in the ice near McMurdo Station as a part of Operation Deep Freeze – the U.S. military’s contribution to the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation.
