A large white U.S. Navy hospital ship, identified as the USNS Mercy (T-AH-19), is underway on open blue ocean waters. The vessel is clearly marked with multiple large red cross symbols on its hull and superstructure, indicating its protected status under the Geneva Conventions. A rainbow is visible in the background against a partly cloudy sky.

Carrying more than 600 U.S. and partner nation military, non-governmental organization, and civilian mariner personnel in support of Pacific Partnership 2012, the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) transits May 18 through the Pacific toward Guam - where they will pick up their remaining personnel. Now in its seventh year, Pacific Partnership is an annual U.S. Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance mission designed to work by, with and through host and partner nations, non-governmental organizations and international agencies to build partnerships and a collective ability to respond to natural disasters.
