Colonels Peter Baumgarten (left) and David Furness, the incoming and outgoing commanding officers of 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, stand together to observe the pass and review of troops during the change of command ceremony at Camp Horno, June 8. Baumgarten, who relieved Furness, comes to the illustrious regiment from U.S. Northern Command where he served as liaison officer to the U.S. Southern Command in Miami. In September of 2010, Furness led 1st Marines forward to Afghanistan and commanded Regimental Combat Team 1 throughout their yearlong deployment. Furness will be transferring to Quantico, Va., to begin his next assignment as the director of Expeditionary Warfare School.
