Colonel Peter Baumgarten (center) receives the battle colors and relieves Col. David Furness (right) as the commanding officer of 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, during the change of command ceremony at Camp Horno, June 8. Baumgarten comes to the illustrious regiment from U.S. Northern Command where he served as liaison officer to the U.S. Southern Command in Miami. In September of 2010, Furness led 1st Marines forward to Afghanistan and commanded Regimental Combat Team 1 throughout their yearlong deployment. Furness will be transferring to Quantico, Va., to begin his next assignment as the director of Expeditionary Warfare School.
