SAN DIEGO (Dec. 4, 2019) Hospitalman James Boyd, assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), polishes surgical equipment that has been through a multi-step sterilization process in the Sterilization Processing Department (SPD) Dec. 4. All of NMCSD’s medical instruments, as well as instruments from nearby military medical clinics, are processed through NMCSD’s Sterile Processing Department (SPD). SPD is responsible for the proper sterilization, packing for transfer and assembly of medical instruments that arrive from clinics in the region. NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high-quality healthcare services, and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
