Kearny, N.J. native, Sgt. 1st Class Oscar Ayala, tank commander for the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, assembles and disassembles the .50-caliber machine gun during the gunnery skills training portion of the Sullivan Cup competition, here, May 7. “At the time I didn’t know if it was timed or just a ‘Go’ or ‘No-Go’ event. But I know the weapon inside and out, I could assemble and disassemble the weapon with my eyes closed,” Ayala said about the .50-cal. challenge, his favorite part of the competition. “I outperformed all other competitors and completed with five minutes and 45 seconds.”
