Gary Larson (center), facility operations manager with the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, lights up an ice wedge for a tour group inside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Permafrost Tunnel on Sept. 12. The tunnel is used for research to better understand permafrost in relation to climate change and provides visitors a unique opportunity to explore environments from 10,000 to 40,000 years ago. With only one other permafrost tunnel in the world, the Army and CRREL maintain the only tunnel used to research permafrost.
