The Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Chiefs Mess and chief selectees lead a commemoration of the Oct. 12, 2000, attack on USS Cole (DDG 67) and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Airlines flight 93. The tribute at the Vietnam Memorial on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado honored the 17 Sailors who were killed and 39 who were injured as well as the dozens of Sailors who saved crewmembers and the ship in the aftermath of the attacks. It also served as a remembrance of the 2,996 people killed in New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and those who suffered lingering physical and emotional effects of those events.
