Guatemalan army Maj. William Barrios, (second from right) talks to Bolivian army Lt. Col. Richard Balcazar (left) during Peacekeeping Operations-Americas 2012 in Santiago, Chile, May 2, 2012. Listening in are Brazilian navy Lt. Cmdr. Wagner Vinicius (center) and Guatemalan army Capt. Axel Perez, (right). More than 300 participants from 16 countries from the Americas are in Santiago, Chile, from April 30 to May 11, 2012, to participate in the Command Post Exercise. The exercise scenario is designed to challenge participants' abilities to implement and sustain United Nation Security Council peacekeeping standards, ensuring participants are better prepared to respond to future peacekeeping operational challenges. U.S. Army South and the Chilean Joint Staff are co-hosting Peacekeeping Operations-Americas focusing on the exchange of inter-regional peacekeeping tactics, battalion and company level training and the exchange of information between multinational and joint forces.
