Chess Johnson poses with the soldiers of his platoon in Iraq during their second unit deployment in 2006. Johnson was injured Dec. 3, 2006 during an ambush by enemy insurgents. A sniper’s round tore through his right eye, causing him to lose the eye and require facial reconstructive surgery to repair the right side of his face. It is the memory of 10 fallen Ssoldiers during the same deployment to Iraq that motivates Johnson to participate in competitive sports. He will represent the Army at the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30 – May 5, 2012.
