Ships prepare to enter Miraflores Locks, one of 3 locks used to raise and lower ships as they transit the canal in Panama, Aug. 28. Civil and military forces from 20 countries will participate in PANAMAX 2007, a U.S. Southern Command joint and multi-national training exercise co-sponsored with the Government of Panama, focusing on ensuring the defense of the Panama Canal, one of the most strategically and economically crucial pieces of infrastructure in the world.
