Illinois National Guard Activated for Flood Response

Bob Rogers of the St. Louis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discusses the condition of the levees along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in Hardin, Illinois, with The Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard, Brig. Gen. Richard R. Neely, during a press conference with local and St. Louis-area media on May 30. Earlier in the day, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker activated about 200 National Guard Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 123 Field Artillery, and placed another 200 on standby to respond to extensive flooding along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Already flooded, the river waters are expected to rise up to another two-feet in the coming days. The Illinois National Guard's mission is to reinforce and patrol levees and protect critical infrastructure. They could also be called on to help in evacuation efforts.
