Higa, a nisei soldiers from Hawaii, was in Okinawa during the battle as an interpreter. The month of May is designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the U.S. This monthlong observance celebrates the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. and recognizes the hardships and challenges they endured.
