CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 16, 2019) Rear Adm. Stephen Evans, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 2, and native of Beaufort, S.C., speaks with 97 year-old former USS Yorktown F6 Hellcat pilot Bill Watkinson at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. Watkinson closely witnessed history as he flew security above the signing of the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri, which ended World War II. Evans was in the greater Charleston area as part of Navy Week Charleston and had the opportunity to meet with several area business and government leaders. Navy Weeks serve as the U.S. Navy's principal outreach effort into areas of the country that lack a significant Navy presence, helping Americans understand that their Navy is deployed around the world, around the clock, ready to defend America at all times.
