Maj. Gen. Dennis Hardy, deputy commander of Third Army, pins the Purple Heart on Sgt. Rafael Lafon, of Costa Mesa, Calif., Wednesday, July 25, at Camp Virginia, Kuwait. Lafon, 39, suffered minor wounds when mortar shells landed near him west of An Nasariyah, Iraq, June 28. Lafon is a member of 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment of the California National Guard, which deployed to Third Army (forward) in Kuwait in June 2007 to provide convoy security operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
