Sailors from air department's launch and recovery division inspect the arresting gear wire and associated spring in the landing area of the flight deck following flight operations on the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), June 23. The arresting wire is what the tail hook of an aircraft catches and stops an aircraft while landing on the flight deck. Stennis, part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, is on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and maritime operations. Maritime operations help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations.
