190111-N-JB192-004 SAN DIEGO (January 11, 2019) – From left, Capt. Matthew McGonigle, commodore of Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE, Cmdr. Emily Cathey, a native of Statesville, North Carolina and commanding officer, USS Independence (LCS 2), and Cmdr. Matthew Scarlett, a native of Ravenna, Ohio and prospective commanding officer of Independence, bow their heads during an invocation by Lt. Cmdr. Scott Shields during a change of command ceremony aboard the ship. Independence is the first variant in the LCS class and is currently serving as a testing ship, responsible for testing of LCS mine warfare equipment, development of LCS tactics and training for other LCS crews in preparation for deployment. LCS vessels are high-speed, agile, shallow draft, mission-focused surface combatants designed for operations in the littoral environment, yet fully capable of open ocean operations.
