190111-N-JB192-0001 SAN DIEGO (January 11, 2019) – Sailors from Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE prepare to serve as color guard during a change of command ceremony aboard USS Independence (LCS 2). Independence is the first variant in the LCS class and is currently serving as a testing ship, responsible for testing of LCS mine warfare equipment, development of LCS tactics and training for other LCS crews in preparation for deployment. LCS vessels are high-speed, agile, shallow draft, mission-focused surface combatants designed for operations in the littoral environment, yet fully capable of open ocean operations.
