The Regata Storica, or Historic Regatta is famous for its spectacular historical water parade that precedes the race; the event, which takes place the first Sunday of September dates back centuries, probably as far back as the mid-13th century when Venice needed to train the crews of its Navy in the art of rowing. Nowadays, there are four different races divided in terms of age and type of craft: young rowers’ twin-oared pupparini; women’s twin-oared mascarete; six-oared caorline regatta, and the twin-oared gondolini regatta. Visitors may attend the historic parade and the regattas seating on the uncovered floating stalls set up along the Grand Canal near Campo San Vio.
