Texas Soldier Donates Life Saving Stem Cells

EL PASO- A Soldier in 3rd Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery Regiment, deployed to the Texas-Mexico border as part of Joint Task Force Guardian Support says he’s not a hero, he's just doing “what is right." Nearly five years ago, Spc. Akeem Martin, Houston, Texas, signed up with Be The Match, an international organization that matches recipients with donors of stem cell and bone marrow. Since answering the call and donating the life-saving cells, Martin has carried the thank you note from his recipient, LaShonda Goines, Houston, Texas. His donated stem cells enabled LaShonda to go from a double cancer diagnosis to being cancer free in seven months. Spc. Martin is a fireman as his civilian profession and a chaplain’s assistant for the Texas Army National Guard.
