A visit by retired NASA engineer Norman Chaffee to STARBASE AT Kingsley Field was an opportunity to showcase items he collected during his career, including this heat shield plug which was burned on one end during reentry to the earth’s atmosphere in July 1969. Chaffee discussed with local, Klamath Falls, Ore., students how his interest in science and technology paved the way for a career at NASA through the infamous “space race” all the way into the 1990s.
