Carmella Navarro, suicide prevention program manager for the Army Reserve’s Chicago-based 85th Support Command, gives opening remarks during the command’s Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training workshop, Sep. 27-28, 2018. The workshop certifies Soldiers and staff members in skills that help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Navarro, along with other SPPMs across the country, coordinated the workshop for local community partners that can support people who struggle with suicidal ideations, to include Army Reserve Soldiers living within those communities. According to Navarro, the resources that are available to an active component Soldier, on their installation, are not necessarily the same for a reserve component Soldier because of the broad and sometimes remote locations that Army Reserve Soldiers are located across the country.
