181004-N-IY469-034 – Cigarette butt recycling containers were installed to support the Cigarette Waste Recycling Program, in hopes of keeping them from littering the grounds around NMCP. The recycling process takes the filter, which is made of a white synthetic fiber called cellulose acetate, thoroughly cleans, melts and pelletizes it. They are then combines with other plastics and used for new plastic products such as shipping pallets and plastic lumber. The installation was in conjunction with the cleanup part of the National Public Lands Day observance, originally scheduled for Sept. 28 but moved to Oct. 4 due to Hurricane Florence.
