New York Army National Guard Maj. Stephen Carson visits with Afghan National Police Officers at a security checkpoint in Sharan, Afghanistan in 2009. Carson, then a captain, served as a Physician’s Assistant support of an Alabama Army National Guard engineer battalion during the year-long deployment. Carson supervised 16 battalion medics dispersed with the battalion across the RC-East area of operations and worked in the battalion aid station and assisted a Forward Surgical Team located on the unit forward operating base.
