Pvt. Samnith Thy, Pfc. Matthew Gragg, and Pfc. Christian Loera, all with Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, use their combined weight to push the spades of their crew’s M777 155 mm Howitzer further down into a hole to lessen the recoil of the artillery piece when it fires Oct. 13 during a direct fire exercise. Thy, a Bakersfield, Calif., native, Gragg, a Birmingham, Ala., native, and Loera, a San Jose, Calif., native, practiced direct firing at close range targets.
