A flyover known as the Missing Man Formation passes over Section 66 and 67 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, August 24, 2018. The flyover was part of a memorial ceremony for Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. John Chapman at the U.S. Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, and was flown by members of the 1st Special Operations Wings. Chapman sacrificed his own life on March 4, 2002 to preserve the lives of his teammates during the Battle of Taku Ghar, Afghanistan, and was originally awarded the Air Force Cross for his actions. However, following a review of the Air Force Cross and Silver Star recipients directed by then-Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Deborah James, then-Secretary of the Air Force, recommended Chapman’s Air Force Cross be upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Chapman's widow, Valerie Nessel, accepted his Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House Aug. 22. (U.S. Army photo by Elizabeth Fraser / Arlington National Cemetery / released)
