“It has been such a cool experience building this two-room elementary school classroom,” said U.S. Army Spc. Christopher Maldonado, an interior electrician assigned to the 84th Engineer Battalion at Cabu Elementary School in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, May 7, 2018. “Our mission is to build this structure, but at the same time we are building relationships with the local Philippine Army and other partners like the Japanese soldiers (Japan Ground Self-defense Force) who have helped us make this project happen. This is my second time participating in Balikatan, and every time I come the locals teach us something new and we teach them something new as well. So it really is a partnership that gets things done.”
Exercise Balikatan, in its 34th iteration, is an annual U.S.-Philippine military training exercise focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism and other combined military operations held from May 7 to 18.(U.S. Navy graphic by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Daniel Hinton)
