An adult in a blue vest and plaid shirt kneels on the ground to plant a small seedling while a group of young children in safety vests watch attentively. A military service member in camouflage uniform stands nearby holding a shovel. The scene appears to be an outdoor educational tree-planting event involving schoolchildren and community members.

Forester James Kerkman shows how to plant a tree on April 27, 2018, with students and staff with the Child Development Center and others during the Fort McCoy, Wis., observance of Arbor Day. Dozens of adults and children from the Fort McCoy community participated in the installation’s 30th observance of Arbor Day with the planting of more than 400 trees on the cantonment area. The installation ceremony included not only the planting of 415 trees, but also the reading of the Arbor Day proclamation and the presentation of the installation’s 29th consecutive Tree City USA award.
